Schoolmaster

 The law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.. 

Galatians 3:24

Japanese people largely accept the commandment ‘Do not kill’ (Exodus 20:13) although even this most straightforward of the 10 commandments is not without controversy. What about war? What about abortion? What about capital punishment? What about eating meat!? Which is why the Catholic catechism has a whole chapter on this one commandment alone…. Paul’s point is it is only when we realize our inability to live life without breaking the commandments that we see our need for grace. You may never had had an abortion, but you have probably lied at least once, which breaks the law against bearing false witness..(Exodus 20:16)
