Propitiation

[Christ] Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not ours only, but also for the whole world ..
1 John 2:2

Propitiation is not a word that gets used much in modern English, but like a lot of Latinate words, it is very specific, & that's why it is used here. Oxford defines it as "the action of propitiating or appeasing a god ..". In Latin "propitius" means favourable or gracious. The modern world struggles to believe in God at all, much less that He needs to be appeased. Holiness is a alien concept to many people, let alone practiced. To put it in Japanese terms: just washing at a Shinto shrine is not enough. To get back to today's verse, here is the simplified Good News version : "Christ himself is the means by which our sins are forgiven, & not our sins only, but the sins of everyone.."
