Frightened

They were startled & frightened, & supposed that they saw a spirit.

Today on the way home from church I saw some Japanese children playing with a Jack O'Lantern decoration like it was a piñata. Japan tends to like its Halloween 🎃 cute rather than too scary. As for me, going to the dentist is about as scary as it gets in suburbia. Until you get that cancer diagnosis, or North Korea drops the big one. Philip Larkin has a poem about ambulances, which ends:

                                                Far

From the exchange of love to lie

Unreachable inside a room

The traffic parts to let go by

Brings closer what is yet to come

And dulls to distance all we are.
